Red Stag Restaurant History
The Red Stag Restaurant is deeply rooted in the history of the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre, a landmark in Southwest Virginia. The establishment was the lifelong dream of Wytheville resident Peggy Sutphin, who famously sketched the design for the theater and restaurant on a napkin during a meal with her sister and a friend in the late 1990s. Seeking to honor her family’s German heritage, she named the venue “Wohlfahrt” after an ancestor who immigrated to the United States in 1750. When the doors finally opened in 1999 with a production of My Fair Lady, the restaurant and theater quickly became a cultural anchor for the community, blending European “gemütlichkeit” (coziness) with Appalachian charm.
For over 25 years, the restaurant—including its signature Matterhorn Lounge—has served as a gathering place for both locals and travelers along Interstate 81. Though the property went up for auction in late 2024 following Peggy’s passing, its legacy was preserved when it was purchased in 2025 by Dr. Amanda Brewer-Lord and her family. Today, the Red Stag continues to operate with the same mission Peggy envisioned: providing a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere where German culinary traditions and professional theater thrive side-by-side.
